This week in Dr. Reed's Honors Freshman Composition class there have many been many steps taken towards progress. The class service project, Operation: Donation, now has a set plan of action.
First, we have decided as a class to allow Dr. Reed's aqquaintances to take the care packages we create to the troops overseas. This man, Will, flies regularly to Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and several other countries located in the Middle East. It is our understanding Will is going to deliver the care packages to the men and women that are serving in the United States Air Force. Will and his mother have also contributed to us a list of the items that the men and women will particularly enjoy. Will is also going to be making a visit to the class in the next few upcoming class meetings. This is a wonderful opportunity and it was a great decision by the class to take this offer and save money on packaging and shipping.
The class has also come up with a dynamic work schedule where the students will work the donation sites at various times and strategically picked locations. First the class signed up for times and days that they would be available to work. Then, the days and hours of the students were put together will other students so that they were scheduled to work in pairs of two or more. Once the schedule was created, Dr. Reed and the class went day by day assigning locations that would be good to work at. However, there were a few complications with whether or not the students would be allowed to set up donation tables at Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie as well as the Theron Montgomery Building on campus. Although, Winn-Dixie did turn out to be a success and allow to students to set up their tables and donation site at the store. There are several locations, both on and off campus, that donation sites will be set up during the next two weeks. The on-campus donation sites include: the Stone Center, Martin Hall, the Houston Cole Library, the university quad, and several residency halls. The off-campus donation sites include Jacksonville Winn-Dixie and possibly Walgreens or other local stores.
As far as donations go, the class will be accepting monetary donations as well as items that are needed by the active-duty military personnel. The monetary donations collected from the donation sites will be gathered and passed onto the English 103 student, Will. Will has a safe and can safely store the monetary donations raised by the students. As items are donated to the students, they will transfer them to the Jacksonville State University Honors House located behind the Stone Center. The Honors House can safely store all of the items raised by the Honors Freshman Composition class.
Within the Advertising Committee, there has been steady progress. The Advertising Committee has managed to post flyers about the Operation: Donation service project all over campus. This committee has also managed to give posters to several different groups of students that they will be able to take to their donation sites while they work. Below is a link with several photographs of soldiers with care packages or items included in care packages that may have been or could be included on the posters created by the Advertising Committee:

Progress: Week 3
Dr. Teresa Reed's Honors English 103 class has created a noble and thoughtful service project for the soldiers serving in the armed forces overseas. As a class, we have decided to focus our service project on raising money and items to send care packages to the soldiers overseas that are in need. The class has also split itself up into several committees. This blog will be focusing on the actions and progress of the Advertising Committee.
This week in Dr. Teresa Reed's class there are very many steps being taken within the class generated service project. In the Advertising Committee, our ideas and services are in great demand to get the service project moving into action. Throughout this week and the next, the Advertising Committee plans to have completed all of their major goals to advertise for the service project such as: finish designing and creating flyers, hang the flyers up at places located all over the community, design posters for donation sites, and begin updating the social networking sites.
There are various aspects to consider while creating and designing flyers to advertise with. First, one must consider all of the information needed to put on the flyer and how much space you will need to alot for that information on the flyer itself. Second, one must consider the audience, or people, that the advertisements will be projected to. This must be taken into consideration so that the advertisements will result in being appealing to people of all ages and cultures, as well as being attractive enough to display creativity and catching the reader's eye. Then, one must choose the design and layout of the flyer that will be used to put all of the information, and possibly photos on. After the design has been chosen, one would then proceed to enter all of the information needed familiarize the reader with the service project and what they could help with. In our case, we will be putting all of the information needed to get the word out about our Operation: Donation service project. We will be entering the information on what exactly our service project is about, who is involved with our project, what our goals within the project are, what items and/or money is needed, as well as when and where the donation sites will be set up. Also, the flyers will be printed off onto flourescent colored paper that will hopefully catch the eye of all passer-bys. The flyers are quick, informative way to get the word out about the service project and appeal to the community as a whole.
After the flyers are designed and printed, the Advertising Committee will strategically collaborate to determine where exactly the best locations would be to post them. Because flyers are so simple and space-efficient, there are very few limits as to where they can be posted. The Advertising Committee plans to print off several hundred flyers that way we have no supply restrictions on the amount of flyers we have. The flyers will definitely be placed in all high traffic areas such as the major academic, student, residence, and dining halls located on campus. Flyers may also be placed on various telephone polls, car windows, and several other places on Jacksonville State University's campus. Furthermore, there are many places off campus that flyers will be posted at. The flyers will most certainly be placed at our off campus donation sites such as Winn-Dixie and Wal-Mart. They may also be posted at several local gas stations, grocery stores, clothing stores, post-offices, and other locations that would allow flyers to be posted at. The main goal of putting up flyers is to get the word out on as broad of a scale as we can. We want everyone and anyone to know about the Operation: Donation service project.
The Advertising Committee will also be creating and designing posters. The posters will primarily be created to be posted at the donation sites in hopes of catching the people's attention and bringing them over to the students working the sites to learn about the service project and possibly donate items and/or money. The posters will be created within the next week so that they will be finished before the first donation site is ready to set up. We will be creating at least four posters for the donation sites so that if there are more than one donation periods in a day, the groups will not have to worry about finding a way to transfer the posters to the other groups. The posters will be created on either poster board or a cardboard tri-fold. The posters will be large enough and designed in a way that will appeal to the community as a whole. The posters will basically be a larger scale version of the flyer. The posters will have all of the same information posted on them that were included in the flyers. Below is a link that will connect to the Hobby Lobby website. This is a great place to look for all supplies needed to make appealing posters, flyers, and so much more. Also, this store may have lock-boxes as discussed in class.

This committee will also continue with advertising on the social networking sites. As soon as all information is finalized and confirmed, the Advertising Committee will retrieve this information to relay onto the social networking sites such as the Facebook page and the Twitter account. These accounts are focusing on the portion of the community that may not have a reliable way of transportation and may not be able to go out and see one of the flyers or donation sites. Advertising on social networking sites allows the Advertising Committee to get the word of our service project out to the community on a larger scale. Also, if anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns they can simply message or post on the Facebook or Twitter networks and actually have a member of the class respond to them.

Progress: Week 2
This week in our Honors English 103 class, the Advertising Committee is mainly continuing our work to make creative, informative advertisements about our service project with the armed forces. The members in our group: Brandon, Savan, Kristina, and I are still currently brainstorming and designing layouts for flyers. Brandon has proceeded to make seven different designs for the flyers. We plan to design a variety of flyers that will appeal to all ages of people. http://www.creativebloq.com is a website that has hundreds of eye-catching and inspiring flyer templates and designs. The flyers will be placed all over campus. The flyers can be placed in all of the different learning halls, dining halls, student residency halls, and possibly even on car windshields. Furthermore, I have created a Twitter account for all of our announcements pertaining to our service project to be advertised on. The following link will take you to the previously stated webpage: http://www.Twitter.com/EH103_. Also, the Advertising Committee will be using the Facebook account that was set up by another classmate to post announcements. The social networking sites are to be used to expand our outreach on being able to get the word out about our project. Anyone in the class who has information that they would like to be announced are asked to submit their information to the Advertisement Committee so we can update the advertisements as well as the social networking sites. As posters from fellow classmates are brought in, Kristina and I will begin to design them. The posters will be placed at local businesses as well as the donation sites. The posters will act as a larger, more appealing take on the small flyers. For example, if the Donation Committee does, in fact, decide to set up donation sites at shopping centers such as Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie, as customers come out their attention needs to be captured in order to draw them to the table where the donation volunteers are set up. Also, we are still planning to get advertisments up on the LED screen in front of the Theron Montgomery Building, on the Jacksonville State University campus radio station, as well as The Chanticleer newspaper. To make all of these advertisements and announcements possible, the Advertising Committee will need to interact with several different committees such as the Liason Committee and the Donation Committee. We will need to ask these committees a few very significant questions. The Advertising Committee will need to speak with the Donation Committee to determine where the donation sites will be located, when the donation drives will be taking place, and what items are needed to be donated. The Advertising Committee will also need to interact with the Liason Committee to see if it is possible to get advertisements on the LED screen in front of the TMB, as well as on the campus radio station and newspaper.

Progress: Week 1
The Advertising Committee consists of four members: Savan Patel, Brandon Phillips, Kristina Warren, and myself. Also, we have Elijah Pope to oversee our committee. Thus far, within the Advertising Committee, we have collaborated and came up with ideas and goals for the group as well as delegated responsibilities to individuals. We have many different ways that we would like to advertise for this project to aid in its success. The first few advertisements we plan to create go as follows: posters, fliers, social media accounts, LED projections, radio announcements, and newspaper articles. Savan Patel will be working side-by-side with Brandon Phillips to design and create fliers to post around the campus and community. I, Jerrica Lindsey, will be working with Kristina Warren to design and create posters that we can hang at popular areas around campus. We are striving to get started with the fliers and posters as soon as possible. I will also be working on creating a Twitter account for the project, as well as adding information to the project's Facebook page. As a group, we plan to communicate and collaborate with other committees to complete several of our goals. We must work with the Research Committee to find out what items are needed or how much money will be needed so we can advertise this information to the community. As we find out this information, we should be able to find photographs of items to put on our advertisements to help the community get a better understanding of what the soldiers need. We may post a picture such as this to aid in the community's understanding:
Furthermore, we will need to communicate with the Liason Committee to learn how to get permission to advertise things on the LED projector in front of the Theron Montgomery Building, the campus radio station, and the Chanticleer newspaper. We plan to get this information from the other committees the very first chance we get. The information needed is crucial, considering we must have it to be able to advertise it to the campus and community. Once our committee takes the initial step to get started, the process should continue smoothly throughout the project. However, we plan to take our committee seriously and work at it tediously. We understand that the Advertisement Committee is one of the most important ones in the fact that, the more people that know about our project and what it means to donate and help the soldiers in need that are risking their lives for us, the more chance we have of our project being successful.
Also, we will need to work with the Donation Committee to determine where and when items and/or money can be donated by the community. There will need to be advertisements at the donation sites so that individuals will be able to easily distinguish where exactly the donation sites are. We may use an advertisement such as the one listed below to clearly display when and where the site is.
